Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions before booking?
We understand pelvic floor physiotherapy can feel unfamiliar. Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often. If you don’t see your question, we’re always happy to help.
Do I need an internal pelvic examination?
No. An internal examination is never required. Your physiotherapist will explain your assessment options and only perform an internal examination if it is appropriate, beneficial, and you provide informed consent. External assessment and treatment options are always available.
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No. You can book directly with our chiropractor, physiotherapist, or naturopathic doctor without a referral.
Some extended health insurance plans require a physician’s referral for reimbursement. If you’re unsure, we recommend checking with your insurance provider before your appointment.
Is pelvic floor physiotherapy covered by insurance?
Yes. Most extended health insurance plans include physiotherapy coverage. We also offer direct billing for most major insurance providers whenever possible.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily. Athletic wear or loose-fitting clothing is ideal. If an internal assessment is recommended, you’ll be provided with privacy, clear explanations, and appropriate draping throughout.
Can pelvic floor physiotherapy help during pregnancy?
Absolutely. Pelvic floor physiotherapy can help manage pelvic girdle pain, pubic symphysis pain, low back pain, bladder leakage, and prepare your body for labour and delivery. Treatment is adapted to every stage of pregnancy.
Can I start pelvic floor physiotherapy after having my baby?
Yes. Whether you had a vaginal birth or a Caesarean section, pelvic floor physiotherapy can support your recovery, improve strength and function, and help you return to daily activities safely. Even if you’ve been postpartum for months or years, treatment can still be beneficial.
How many appointments will I need?
Every person is different. Some concerns improve in just a few visits, while others require a longer treatment plan. After your assessment, your physiotherapist will recommend a personalized plan based on your goals and symptoms.
Is pelvic floor physiotherapy painful?
Treatment should not be painful. Your comfort is always our priority. Every technique is explained before it is performed, and you can stop or modify treatment at any time.
Can I bring my baby to my appointment?
Yes. We understand arranging childcare isn’t always possible. Babies are welcome to attend postpartum appointments, and we’ll do our best to make your visit as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
